Scything and Espalier at Elmete Orchard!

We are delighted that Elmete Community Orchard has a new project leader and work has already restarted at the Orchard. A lot of work - and enjoyment went into bringing this historic orchard back to life and the Orchard group are very keen to maintain it as a productive orchard and a local contributer to biodiversity. The group has an expert in espalier and an expert scyther and work has already begin to espalier some of the trees and to use scything to clear the undergrowth. A scythe is an ideal implement in the orchard as it makes it easy to clear the growth right under the tree canopy!

There will be a couple of sessions over the coming months to ensure that the orchard is back in top shape before the end of the season. The first session will be later this month and the second in autumn. There will also be some fruit picking sessions. There will be the option to learn how to scythe.
