Over 3000 trees planted by REAP supporters
We are celebrating a very successful planting season for REAP with the support of our local community, other organisations like Friends of Roundhay Park (FORP), Roundhay Allotments and Gardens Association (RAGA) as well as scouts from across the area.
With over 70 people joining us over three weekends, we have managed to plant over 3000 little trees around the boundary of the RAGA allotment on Old Park Road and Lidgett Park Road. Soup was enjoyed by all when two REAP supporters kindly brought some for hungry planters. Digging was very wet and muddy on the first weekend with many mud splattered faces at the end of the day. The second weekend was a beautiful sunny day but the digging was difficult with gravel from the track up to Connaught Field having spilt into our planting area. RAGA have also been busy planting within the boundaries of the allotment to fill in gaps in the hedgerow and FORP have been planting around the bottle bank area next to the Tram park. It is hoped that the hedge along the Tram park will reduce the litter that ends up in Foxwood Beck at the bottom of the ravine.
From young to old, 5 to 75 year olds (and older!), we had a wonderful community spirit with many planting their first ever tree. A fabulous quote from one of planters whilst digging in the next generation of hedgerow was that it was ‘Very satisfying to contribute to something good like this that will outlast us!’.
The trees were supplied through the Arium via Leeds City Council. The funding was supplied by the Tree Council who enabled us to create this amazing new wildlife hedge.
A huge thank you to all who joined us to dig, plant, socialise, eat soup, run around and collect sticks as well as plant a Hedgerow for the future.
